Description
St. Dune is a project between brothers Duncan and Peter Lloyd, 3rd generation of Hugh & Molly Lloyd who began the family’s wine journey purchasing the Coriole Vineyard in McLaren Vale in 1967. 2nd generation Mark Lloyd began adding to their famous estate old Shiraz vines, experimenting with European grape varieties like Sangiovese, Fiano, Grenache, Mataro et al. Duncan and Peter grew up immersed in a world of wine, olive oil, illegal goats’ cheese, and great food, so it was almost fait acompli they would follow and expand the family’s love and curiosity with wine and food. Both boys worked in kitchens from the age of 13 and developed a love of good food plus an understanding of wine's role in bringing food to life… this shows in their wines. Duncan studied winemaking around the world. Using fruit sourced from a vineyard in the Blewitt Springs sub-region of McLaren Vale. They crafted this Champion Trophy winning “Dune The Empty Quarter” SMG+… a blend of Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro along with a small amount of Touriga Nacional. They farm organically, ferment simply with low levels of sulphur and minimally filter… this is a red of considerable character, energy, flavour, style and deliciousness… once sipped it is very hard to put the glass down.
Smells
Purple fruits, mulberry and dark cherry, sweet sage flower lift balanced with savoury notes of aniseed, cured meats, plus a subtle white pepper lift.
Tastes
The palate unleashes a juicy array of fresh blue and dark fruits including plum and blueberry. Dark chocolate, spices, pepper, anise and savoury cured meat complexities add layers to this delicious red blend. It’s like McLaren Vale meets the Rhone stylistically. The fine, long, supple tannins and juicy acidity buoy the succulent palate throughout. It will age gracefully through 2030+… but is already incredibly approachable and moreish.
