Description
The original tribute to pioneering Hawke's Bay winemaker Tom McDonald, the Merlot Cabernet blend is a luxurious and voluptuous monster in 2019. Impressively built like a cage fighter, the wine has a lightness and freshness that is faithful to its Bridge Pa terroir on the Redstone vineyard. A blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, this is a confident red built for the long haul, filled with massive tannin and extract working in perfect harmony. Decant in its youth or enjoy after 2028.
Smells
Dark and brooding nose of cedar, dark chocolate, dried herbs, blackcurrant, satsuma plums, oyster shell and creme de cassis.
Tastes
A huge dose of dark fruit and lavish oak, wrapped in a shell of fine, grainy, architectural tannins. Still very youthful but its whopping potential is on full display. A monumental red worthy of its TOM moniker, this wine will be a 25 to 30-year proposition for those with the patience, but a hedonistic treat in its first decade too. Enjoy with beef prime rib from 2028 onwards.
