Description

Rutherglen Muscat is the 8th Wonder of the World, no kidding. This Yalumba Antique Muscat is a blend of some batches of muscat from outside of Rutherglen, so technically not a pure Rutherglen Muscat but still the style reigns strongly. And no-one describes it better than decanter: “Like Rutherglen Muscat, shrivelled and partially raisined berries are fermented briefly on skins, then fortified. Fruit is sourced from red and black (as well as Rutherglen’s brown) Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains mutations. Ageing in hogsheads and barriques dials up the richness (360g/l residual sugar), unleashing bourbon and marzipan-like nutty notes to its boozy Christmas pudding and medjool date flavour. Moreish, not mawkish, with savoury chicory coffee notes and deftly balanced acidity.”— Decanter, Jan 2021

Smells

the bouquet is irresistible, and you could simply smell the glass all night long… nutty, rancio, liquorice, bourbon, toasted hazelnuts with hints of orange blossom and marzipan.

Tastes

Rutherglen Muscat shows more purity of fruit, speaking of the pure Muscat variety, here there is more oak influence, but all the same this is outrageously good. Rich, dense and 500% satisfying, drink this instead of having a dessert or serve with a cheese selection. Drinking perfectly now. The recommended serving temperature is 6-8 degrees.
