Description
Made in only the best years, Comtes, as it’s affectionately known, is Taittinger’s flagship cuvee. Created by Claude Taittinger in 1952, it is an elegant Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay) which 5% sees oak maturation. Matured for 8-10 years in their cathedral-like chalk cellars, it is the ultimate expression of the Grand Crus villages of the Cote des Blancs. While it is sublime now, it will only improve with time in the cellar… if you have the patience!
Smells
The nose takes you into a world of freshness, opening smoothly to reveal aromas of lemon zest, chamomile, jasmine, peach and pastry with a touch of iodine salinity.
Tastes
On the palate, the wine quickly pulsates as its effervescence unfurls into an invigorating sensation. It tightens up on the finish to leave a lingering taste imbued with ginger and liquorice. Possessing a natural delicacy, this Comtes de Champagne 2013 extends its energy with dynamism and a striking purity of aromas, superbly revealing the saline and mineral austerity of the excellent Côte des Blancs terroirs. Simply irresistible and it would be too easy to open, given however 10 years+ in a temperature-controlled cellar and this wine will bring you to your knees. Exceptional from go to whoa. Serve with fresh oysters, or your favourite fresh seafood. For optimal drinking pleasure the recommended serving temperature is 6-8 degrees.
