Description
The McDonald Series is dedicated to Tom McDonald (1907-1987) whose dedication to crafting fine wines was a building block of the Hawke's Bay's reputation as a superb wine region. The modern-day Church Road winery still encompasses his legacy and crafts renowned wines using traditional French winemaking techniques. And this 2021 Merlot truly extols the virtues of this exceptional vintage, their knowledge, experience, and tradition, simply a striking wine.
Smells
Classic plum and rich berry aromas with inviting floral aromas, underpinned by coffee, chocolate, and toasty vanilla oak.
Tastes
A supple palate filled with ripe plum and boysenberry fruits layered with dark chocolate and spicy oak characters. Generous and beautifully balanced, there is plenty going on in the glass. The core of concentrated fruit, supple tannins, and long finish, all suggest a wine that will cellar well 8 years+, however, it is delicious and hard to resist right now, if you cannot, decant one hour before serving. Enjoy with a fine cut of red meat.
