Description
A blend of 4 grapes from 3 vineyards – Merlot 44%, Syrah 42%, Malbec 13% and Tempranillo 1% from Te Awanga, Gimblett Gravels, and the Bridge Pa Triangle. From the top vintage of 2023 and as always, Elephant Hill produces spectacular wines across their whole portfolio. Le Phant Rouge 2023 highlights their viticulture and winemaking prowess, especially considering some of the challenges in the growing season. Matured 60% in tank and 40% aged in seasoned French Oak for 17 months. This 2023 has oodles of plush, generous fruit, very approachable and great everyday drinking, the perfect BBQ wine.
Smells
Plenty of juicy blackberries and Black Doris plum, with hints of smoke, spice, a peppery lift and minerality.
Tastes
Loads of plummy fruit, with opulent, rounded mouthfeel, a peppery note showing the influence of Syrah combined with the juiciness of Merlot, and with the Malbec fleshing out the structure, complemented by the salivating tannin/acid balance of the Tempranillo. Great drinking now through 2027 and will pair with a juicy steak or Thai beef salad. The recommended serving temperature is 16-18 degrees.
