Description

Champion Trophy “Best International Red Wine” NZ International Wine Show + Double Gold Medal (unanimous Gold Medal scores from all Show Judges). Castano's Hécula Monastrell is Epic Value by world standards. To quote our Fine Wine Delivery Tasting Panel Chair… “If there are better value red wines in the world than Castano's Hécula Monastrell, there aren't many!” This latest vintage another statement of intent from the Old Vine Monastrell producer in DO Yecla, Murcia, Spain. The fruit is harvested from low yielding older Bush Vines grown at 750m altitude. The dry/hot daytime temperatures perfect for ripening with the cool nighttime winds coming in off the Mediterranean locking in structure and bringing freshness to the ripe, concentrated flavours. A judicious 6 months in French (80%) and American (20%) oak barrels has added complex oak nuances and enhanced mouth feel. It's a big, rich, ripe red that's light on its feet, filled with liquorice, coffee & chocolate charm. Magnificent drinking now, but with serious depth to support 7-10 years cellar life.

Smells

Dark brooding aromas of plum, blackberry, raspberry, fruitcake, and liquorice.

Tastes

Rich and plummy with additional blackberry, blueberry and raspberry fruits. Lots of quality textural & tannin mouth feel… with coffee, chocolate, subtle toast and liquorice adding plenty of charm. Its mid palate largesse is beautifully reined in by delicacy and freshness on the lengthy finish. Epic Champion Trophy & Double Gold quality BBQ and regular drinking for the money.

We taste, rate & guarantee every wine we sell.
