Description
5 Gold Medals & 95/100… exceptional quality/value Spanish red with huge appeal. Bodegas Piqueras was established in 1915 with Christmas lottery winnings… -4-generations later, they are crafting exceptional quality & value Spanish wines. The 65-90-year-old vine vineyards were planted on original root stock between 750-950m altitude and are DRY grown. The 4 separate parcels of Monastrell, Garnacha, Tempranillo & Syrah are vinified individually… with 22-days maceration on skins and manual pumping over. Racked several times… each blend undergoes manual bâtonnage (stirring of lees) monthly, post malolactic fermentation. The four varieties are then blended and aged in medium-toasted, fine French Allier barrels for up to 14 months. The wine is bottled unfiltered and aged for a minimum of 18 months. This 2017 is already aged 7-years for you… it is entering a perfect drinking window between primary & savoury and should drink beautifully through 2028. Exceptional quality, exceptionally modestly priced!
Smells
Deep, dark and brooding aromas of sun-baked fruits, baked earth, hints of chocolate, cedar, sweet spices.
Tastes
Rich, ripe fruit on the palate with blackberry tart, black plum, chocolate, sandalwood, cinnamon and nutmeg flavours abounding. Its deliciousness is captured in soft mouthcoating tannins and a salivating texture guiding it to a long warm finish. Lovely ripe and layered red with energy and style. Great drinking now and until 2038+… enjoy with cured meats, pasta and slow roasted meats.
