Description
One of the 28 extraordinary varieties cultivated at Hans Herzog Estate, Montepulciano stands out as one of Hans' most successful red grapes. Crafted from 100% Marlborough Montepulciano, the 2019 vintage showcases meticulous care and respect for tradition. The grapes were handpicked, then fermented with wild yeasts, preserving the authentic character of the fruit. The wine was aged for 24 months in French oak, with 30% new barrels, achieving a seamless harmony between wine and wood. The result is a richly textured and complex wine with remarkable depth and structure, capable of aging gracefully for years to come. Uncompromising in its purity, the wine is unfined, unfiltered, and produced with minimal SO₂, delivering a truly natural expression of Marlborough terroir. The 2019 vintage is a classic, boasting serious structure, impeccable balance, and exceptional concentration—a must-try for lovers of age-worthy, handcrafted reds.
Smells
Aromas of dark cherries, blueberries and plums with hints of violets, chocolate, coffee, and spices.
Tastes
Intensely flavoured and intensely structure with an abundance of stern 'Italian'-style tannins, with a juiciness and tantalizing acidity. Real elegance, power, sumptuousness, immensity and emotion is transmitted by tasting this nectar. Enormously long finish, showing a wine great in its youth but with the necessary structure and balance for great longevity. Drink now to 2028+ and perfect with roasted red meats, hearty stews or pasta. The recommended serving temperature is 16-18 degrees.
