Description
The grape Carmenere is these days mainly associated with Chile and is considered a charming oddity in most places in the world, having been chased out of Bordeaux thanks to its high frost risk. Not so in the Piave DOC in Veneto, Italy, where it is on the rise and even "raccomandato" (not just "autorizzato") under several northern Italian DOCs. The wine has the classic grassy, roasted capsicum top note that is the indelible hallmark of the variety, the flavour lessening and integrating as the wine ages. It's very attractive in this context, the mind wandering to a nice slice of pepperoni pizza as a perfect match. Named by importer John Kirwan for his father-in-law Nonno Mario, the front label aptly reads "I dare you to offer him water with his meal."
Smells
Classic Carmenere nose of blackcurrant, violets, blackberry, rocket, and roasted capsicum.
Tastes
Dry, elegant, and focused in a very old-world manner, Carmenere shows off its roots in old-school claret with this expression. Easy to drink now, but a year or two in the bottle will not hurt in the slightest.
