Description
Planted in 1974, this old vineyard lies on the western side of Malmesbury and contains the Portuguese grape Tinta Barocca, which has a fairly substantial history in Swartland. The vines are Old Bush Vines, their sturdy framework keeping the bunches sheltered from the intense Swartland sun. Normally this wine was blended in its youth, but at over 40 years old now, it has all the quality required to earn its place in Eben Sadie’s Old Vine series.
Smells
Eerily reminiscent of mature Burgundy on the nose, with a gamey, herbal quality to go with plenty of cherries.
Tastes
On the palate, the wine is chewy with good structure and refined, long tannins. Flavoursome and long, it will appeal to lovers of Barolo and Burgundy, Eben comparing it to a cross between Syrah and Nebbiolo. Wine critic Neal Martin said it shifted his preconceptions about Tinta Barocca and we can’t help but agree. Enjoy between now and 2030 with all roasted red meats.
