Description
Châteauneuf-du-Pape literally translates to ""The Pope's new castle"" and, indeed, the history of this appellation is firmly entwined with papal history, regal wines!!! The characteristic terroir of Châteauneuf-du-Pape comes from a layer of stones called Galets roules or pebbles in English, rather if you have visited the soil is littered with large round rocks which absorb the heat of the day and radiate it back up into the vines during the night. This results in a very ripe, rich, full-bodied style, typical of Chateauneuf du Pape wines.
Smells
Rich, warm aromas full the glass with baked black plums, figs and even hints of prunes, but softened by notes of lavender, seaweed and black liquorice.
Tastes
A generous style but having said that, this wine has freshness and a lively interplay that is very exciting. Dark berry fruits are subdued by red berries, raspberries and cranberries and the salty, saline texture and finish is engaging and makes this wine more and more appealing. The tannins are warm, and chalky but in perfect harmony with the fruit. A top example that will cellar 10 years plus. Serve with roasted beef or lamb. The recommended serving temperature is 16-18 degrees.
