Description

Côtes du Rhône (CDR) reds are most often a classic GSM blend (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre) that we Kiwis have a love affair with. Most CDR are well north of $20/bottle, some as high as $45. So, when we first discovered Victor Berard Village at an exceptional price... we flew samples from the Rhône to see if it was any good. More than good, it proved to be classic Rhône, generously flavoured with a sustained, very moreish finish. Not only a CDR, but with a “Village” designation. Only 11 of 92 Rhone communes are designated “Village” … with stricter rules around varietal selection and maximum fruit yields per hectare to preserve quality. Victor Berard is generously flavoured with 60% Grenache and superbly structured from 30% Syrah, plus 10% Mourvèdre & Cinsault. One sip and you’ll be excited about the quality you’re enjoying apropos its very modest price. Totally moreish medium-bodied red…It will delight around the BBQ, at the beach, summer picnics, and anytime through 2024-2027.

Smells

Aromas of strawberry, wild raspberries, blackberry, kirsch, hints of forest floor, bramble, and spice.

Tastes

A generous, well-structured CDR Village with a rich core of juicy red & black fruit balanced by chewy gravelly tannins. A complete Ying/yang of fruit to tannin, making it more complex, balanced and intriguing… and for the price tag, it warrants a case purchase. Drinking well now through 2027 with all red meats, cheese, pasta and old-fashioned stews.

We taste, rate & guarantee every wine we sell.
