Description

Step right up, any Pinot that wants a shot at New Zealand's "best circa $20 Pinot" title, Block 88 will take the challenge anytime, anywhere. A big, muscular, and brooding style of Pinot Noir (atypically the $50 Auntsfield Estate style… but typically Auntsfield quality), it's beautifully silky and very harmonious. Although made in the same way, when it comes to Luc & Ben Cowley making the final blend for their elegant Burgundian styled Estate Pinot Noir, the incarnation of NZ’s most full-bodied richly fruited $20ish Pinot Noir takes place. The more opulently flavoured barrels are declassified into Block 88. Not for lovers of the finer more Burgundian style… Block 88 perfectly fits the palates of tens of thousands of Kiwi Pinot lovers… and I am very partial to it as well. We deal directly with Auntsfield on this wine and have NZ exclusivity, why the price v quality is so incredible. Buy it by the case and keep a few bottles back... there's 5-6 years good drinking in this!

Smells

Deep and beautifully rendered nose of red and black fruits, with exotic spices, mulberry and cedar.

Tastes

Generous and very charming with great fruit weight and silky mouthfeel, bursting with black & red cherries, boysenberries, and spice. Block 88 always appeals to fuller style Pinot drinker. Enjoy with game dishes, Sichuan meat-based dishes and five-spiced duck breast between now and 2028.

Tasting the 2021, some earthy and plum notes. The palete presents cherries, plum, and chocolate, with a spicy dry finish. Smooth with some good development, possibly good for another 2 years. Based on this the 2022 vintage is a worthy buy.

Tart redcurrant with hints of cherry. High alcohol content provides a warmth throughout. Mid to prominent oak pushing through.

A very enjoyable wine, easy on the palate with tannins that suggest storing it awhile, would be beneficial.

I couldn't fault it. Rich and delicious with a great taste, smoky undertones, great from the first taste to the last. I'm about to order some more.
