Description
After years of producing the Pahi Single Vineyard Pinot Noir with grapes grown on a town block, the land was sold, which brought the end of the Pahi label. Or so they thought. Escarpment bought a vineyard on Te Muna Rd, opposite the Escarpment home block, which is the new home of the Pahi label and converted to organic status of course. In 2020 the fruit was hand-picked over two days, fermented in open-top traditional cuvees, using indigenous yeast and hand plunged just once a day. After pressing, it matured in 35% new French oak barriques for 16 months. Bottled without fining or filtration, promoting soft mouth feel and texture. This is an outstanding example of classic Pinot noir.
Smells
Warm, welcoming, and complex nose reminiscent of freshly mown summer hay, black cherries, woodsmoke and violets.
Tastes
Elegantly medium-bodied with suggestions of Syrah-like black fruits, liquorice, layered over bright red fruits, violets and cinnamon spice, the dried herb complexity adds another dimension to the palate balanced by a fine acid line and soft silky tannins carrying to a long, detailed finish. A superb Pahi speaking of the new road ahead.
