Description
If ever you needed confirmation that great wine is all about site selection, Greystone is exhibit A. The Thomas family planted the limestone-rich, calcareous clay soils on marginal slopes of the Waipara Valley in 2004… ideal for growing Pinot with beautiful finesse and aromatics. They’re crafting Pinot as fine as great Burgundy. Now the vines are reaching full maturity and are organically managed, it will be both intriguing and exciting to follow the evolution of their Estate Pinot Noir. The growing and winemaking is both simple and traditional. After careful hand picking and sorting each batch of Pinot Noir was allowed to soak on skins at ambient temperatures before going through wild fermentation. They gently hand plunge each vat daily before pressing to French oak barriques after one month maceration. Each barrel goes through a natural malo-lactic fermentation the following Summer, before blending and bottling 16months after harvest. Currently exceptional value by global standards… as the world takes more notice, it won't always be the case - so start your collection today with 6 or 12 of this stunning 95-98 / 100, 2019 vintage and follow its exciting evolution through 2030+. Or just buy a couple of bottles to savour with duck, lamb, venison… whenever you want your taste buds to be seduced.
Smells
Classic Pinot nose of red and black cherry and berry fruits with floral scents and exotic spice.
Tastes
Juicy and sweetly fruited with amazing eastern spice, milk chocolate and French oak notes, a serious structure emerging beneath the lovely hedonistic fruit before wending its way to a delicious contrasting savoury climax. Still a baby, this will be worth cellaring for 10 to 12 years if you want to appreciate its full majesty.
