Description
Pommard, a picturesque village south of Beaune in Burgundy's Côte d’Or, is renowned for its full-bodied Pinot Noirs, which embody a boulder, more structured style with firm tannins. Nestled within a historic terroir of clay and limestone soils, Pommard is a must-visit destination for lovers of Pinot Noir. Joseph Drouhin, one of Burgundy's esteemed producers, showcases the region's essence with their Pommard offerings. Utilizing low-yielding vines, natural yeast, and a meticulous vinification process lasting 2–3 weeks, Drouhin produces compact, well-structured wines that truly reflect the unique Pommard terroir. The 2021 vintage, from a slightly cooler growing season, delivers an elegant expression with balanced acidity and the potential for aging. This village-level wine promises to evolve beautifully over 7–10 years in a temperature-controlled cellar, offering an authentic taste of Burgundy's heritage and craftsmanship.
Smells
a powerful bouquet with notes of black cherry, with an enticing spicy/herbal underbelly, evolving into forest floor and young leather.
Tastes
True to the terroir, the tannins give a certain impression of firmness, which are softened and tamed a tad by the plush, harmonious mid-palate texture. Flavours of dark cherries, and black plums, with lifted notes of raspberries and cranberries, dominate on the tongue, giving way to an acid backbone, and extending the palate. Finishing long, and crunchy. Needs time and serve with lamb, beef, or game meats. The recommended serving temperature is 13-15 degrees.
