2022 Maude Mohawk Hill Pinot Noir

Rarely is Mohawk Hill Pinot available outside of Central Otago, winery cellar door, plus a handful of global fine wine merchants. An expensive Red Burgundy taste alike, but way less pricey.

Description

The name “Mohawk” was given to Maude’s Lowburn Vineyard in Cromwell, as when you stand amidst the vines and look out across Lake Dunstan, the hill you look directly upon was once aptly named Mohawk Hill by the workers who came to Central Otago to build the Clyde Dam. Planted in 2008 at 220m elevation with clones 667, Abel & 5. A perfect 33% whole cluster is part of the intrigue in this beautiful Burgundian like Central Otago Pinot Noir, not overdone like some producers do. 26-days maceration on skins has infused the concentrated dark cherry and plum fruited palate with spices and subtle herbs, wrapping it in silky layers of tannin. Maude Mohawk Hill Single Vineyard Pinot is rarely available for sale outside of the winery cellar door, such is local and international demand allied with its boutique, uber quality focused 600 x 6-pack production. This is everything you want in a Pinot and could easily be mistaken for a very expensive French Red Burgundy.

Smells

Hedonistic aromas of dark summer berries, black cherries, forest floor, crushed thyme and extinguished embers of a summer beach bonfire.

Tastes

Silky, smooth texture with fine grain tannins, a svelte palate where red/black cherry and black plum flavours beautifully coalesce with baking spice, crushed thyme and rosemary complexities. In a word… “Stunning”!! It will evolve more complexity over 5-8 years… but it’s very hard to resist now. Enjoy with gamey meats or mushroom veggie dishes.
