Description
Rockburn in New Zealand’s Central Otago takes its name from the local rugged landscape… they are famed for producing premium hand-picked wines that beautifully reflect the terroir of the region. This 2023 Pinot Noir was fermented in 7-tonne tanks with 1 -4 days cold soak (for colour extraction), followed by fermentation with daily plunging. The wine was then aged in French oak for 10 months (30% new). A small percentage saw some whole bunch fermentation for added complexity and structure. Gorgeous 4 x 95/100 rated Pinot pleasure to enjoy now through to 2029.
Smells
Quintessential aromas of Central Otago unfold… suggesting plush, juicy fruit with ripe summer berries and a herbal twist underpinned by notes of black cherry, plum and charry oak.
Tastes
Vibrant red and black fruits with a rich mocha thread leading to supple, silky tannins all adding to the length and deliciousness. A wonderful harmony between the generous fruit and an almost bitter/sweet, double espresso firmness on the finish, inviting thought and the need for another mouthful. Peking duck and other gamey meat dishes spring to mind whilst I’m savouring a second taste.
