Description
Crafted by Nick Picone (ex-Chief Villa Maria winemaker) – Nick has been awarded 10 x NZ Winemaker of the Year… an unrivalled record. He has access to superb fruit off elevated mature vine Central Otago Pinot Noir vineyards located in the Lowburn Valley sub-region, where several of Otago’s finest Pinots are made. The fruit is harvested in the cooler hours and then destemmed to small fermenters for a period of cold soak to stabilise colour and enhance palate texture. It was fermented gently to ensure a soft silky texture was retained... then softly pressed to French barrels (25% new) for eight months maturation. It was bottled without fining to preserve fruit character. Made to reserve standards with judicious oak maturation... ready to be enjoyed now through 2027.
Smells
An aromatic medley of black cherries, red berries, wild mountain thyme, forest floor, plus dark chocolate.
Tastes
A delicious parade of dark cherry and red berry fruits intermingling with subtle forest floor, baking spice, sage, shitake mushroom, and black forest chocolate. The succulent palate has a rich entry sustained throughout, finishing with intent and bound by velvety tannin and juicy soft acids. Delicious by itself... perfect with roast lamb or lightly seared venison.
