Description
Unsurprisingly a 95/100 at Decanter World Wine Awards, the world’s equal toughest wine show… making the Top 4% of wines in the world for 2023. Esk Valley Artisanal wines tell the story of the Old-World craft and our New World terroir… the legendary skills of winemaker Gordon Russell shine in this 2021 Syrah. Capturing the essence of the stunning vintage and displaying the full bounty of delights that Hawke’s Bay Syrah can deliver. The grapes for this wine were grown in two contrasting Hawkes Bay sites. The free draining stony gravels of Gimblett Road provide the wine with dark fruit notes and a tannic frame while the limestone soils of the Heipipi Vineyard in Bay View add perfume and complexity. Both these free draining vineyard sites are planted with the Limmer Heritage clone and are aged from 12 to 25 years. Individual vineyard parcels were transferred to small 5 tonne open topped concrete fermenters for fermentation with wild vineyard yeasts and 15% whole bunch. The ferments were managed by hand to gently extract colour and tannin. After fermentation and post maceration on skins, the grapes were gently pressed and transferred to a mix of French oak barrels… 228 litre, large format 500 and 600 litre puncheons… a judicious 12% new to allow the fruit to hero. This Syrah is a global bargain, we are fortunate to drink world class quality at amazingly accessible prices. Enjoy now through 2027-2030.
