Description
Homage is a tribute to the late Gerard Jaboulet, who Trinity Hill winemaker John Hancock worked vintage with in 1996, prior to Gerard’s untimely passing. Jaboulet makes the most famous Hermitage of all, La Chapelle, and were kind enough to furnish John with cuttings from their hallowed vines to bring back for planting in Trinity Hill vineyards. Up until and including the 2016 vintage, Trinity Hill Homage had an awards cupboard of… 3 Perfect 100/100 scores – 8 Champion Trophies – 18 Gold Medals – 77 x 5 Star awards (fraction off 10 per vintage) ... a phenomenon, no other NZ red or Syrah can boast. This 2021 (super age worthy, ripe & structural vintage) has 4 close to perfect 97-97-98-98 / 100 ratings. The legend continues... largely from the Gimblett Gravels (though not labelled as such), Homage is about the most pure, perfect expression winemaker Warren Gibson can coax from their low-yielding vineyards. In 2021, they adopted traditional winemaking methods including whole cluster fermentation and foot stomping of the grapes, aged in a mix of small and large French oak barrels between 18 and 21 months, 40% new. A beautifully fragrant and structured wine, drinking it before 2028 is best done after a couple of hours in a decanter, but the upper limits of this wine’s drinking window should easily exceed 20 years if well stored.
Smells
An incredibly fragrant and nuanced bouquet… spicy, leathery, smoky, floral with the full spectrum of black, red, and blue fruit perfumes.
Tastes
Striking concentration and richness of fruit with impeccable tannin structure. Totally seamless and layered with blue, black, and red fruit with spicy, dried herb notes which freshen, complex, and tantalise. Subtle flavours of dark chocolate and espresso add charm to the long, velvety finish, this wine is undoubtedly built to cellar. A truly great Homage, enjoy this aristocratic wine with great food and great company from 2028 onwards… remember time in a decanter is strongly advised if consuming earlier.
