Description
A new single vineyard wine from the Master Syrah makers of Hawke’s Bay, Thomson’s Block is an elevated, north-facing hillside vineyard located on Roys Hill behind the winery. Principally sandstone over limestone it was planted to Syrah in 2007. A sheltered site it is warm during the day but also cool at night. This feature, combined with the location, topography, and soil type, produces Syrah in a more elegant mold – think red fruits, florals, supple tannins, and vibrant acidity. A co-ferment of Syrah with 5% Viognier, the grapes were hand-picked and foot stomped, then fermented in small stainless steel open-top fermenters. After fermentation the wine was aged in new 225L French oak barriques for 21 months.
Smells
The essence of Hawke’s Bay Syrah, Doris plum, blackberry, violet, pepper and spice with hints of cedar oak characters.
Tastes
Absolute velvet on the palate, layers of black fruit mingle with spices… vanilla, clove, cinnamon and more, they just keep coming. Detailed and complex, with amazing mouthfeel from soft juicy tannins and pitch perfect acidity. Drink between 2024 and 2035. Enjoy with eye fillet or hard cheese.
