Description
Syrah is the top-selling variety for boutique Gimblett Gravel producer Unison, and it's no surprise when you raise a glass of this Symphony Syrah to your lips. It began with attention to detail in the vineyard, with high density planting to create deliberate low yields per vine, enabling the growing of consistently fully ripened and healthy grapes every year. In the winery, the grapes are de-stemmed and then basket pressed to avoid over extraction. Then macerated and hand plunged on skins for an extended time before aging 20 months in French oak (15% new) followed by 6-years aging in bottle. A beautiful Syrah crafted by renowned winemaker Jenny Dobson, the aging has been done for you, for which you should be paying a premium! “Unfortunately,” … with the current economic climate resulting in very slow fine wine and restaurant sales… Unison is cashing up aged cellar stocks of this beautiful 8-year-old Gimblett Gravels Syrah at a spectacular $29.99 bottle. Which is “Most Fortunate” for us Premium Hawke’s Bay Syrah lovers. It’s in a fabulous drinking window and will hold that for another 3-4 years.
Smells
A heady and complex perfume of liquorice, toast, cinnamon, dark berries, spices and dark chocolate.
Tastes
Silky, poised, and powerful, full of dark fruits and subtle toasty oak with layers of spices. Deliciously rich with savoury nuances adding intrigue to the supple fruit, the finely grained tannins have melded into the palate and it’s drinking beautifully. At its best right now and through 2028. Decant lightly and enjoy with your favourite roasted red meat… also with aged cheddar.
We taste, rate & guarantee every wine we sell.
