Description
Potiki meaning ‘last born’ in Māori – the newest and ‘Last Born’ wine from Ata Rangi’s world-famous winemaking stables. This World Class Chardonnay is blended from a selection of Mendoza, 95 and 548 Chardonnay clones – very reactive to their Martinborough Terraces environment, they respond to the conditions so well. Hand-picked fruit was whole bunch pressed, with the unsettled juice fully barrel fermented in Burgundy 300L puncheon barrels (20% new) using indigenous yeasts. Partial malolactic has enriched texture while allowing the fruit to be beautifully expressed. It was aged in barrel on lees for 11 months. Beautifully grown & crafted, Potiki will continue to gain in complexity and charm through 2028-2030.
Smells
Generous aromas of yellow skinned peach, buttery French toast, citrus blossom with subtle anise overwhelm and delight.
Tastes
Rich, refined Chardonnay with a creamy texture and salivating, saline acidity portraying purity, freshness and energy. Pureed apple, honeycomb, almond pastry and custard flavours give way to toast and vanilla with a salted lemon skin zest freshening the long, lingering finish. All so enticing, you’re repeatedly drawn back to the glass. Chardonnay with concentration, subtle power and contrasting elegance… impossible to resist. It will benefit from 2-4 years cellaring if you can wait. Great with grilled pork chops or oven roasted chicken.
