Description
One of New Zealand's finest Chardonnays, 2021 represents a new high-water mark for the achievement of TOM Chardonnay. The year was as good as any yet experienced for Chardonnay production and Chris Scott and his team have crafted a masterpiece. A smoky, refined and intensely linear Chardonnay in its youth, it fattens out with airtime to reveal a snapshot of what it will become with cellar time. Best drinking for wines like this tends to be 5 to 12 years from vintage, so patience is definitely recommended and will be substantially rewarded.
Smells
Gunsmoke, sizzled almond butter, vanilla, toasty oak, brioche, peach, nectarine, and hazelnut.
Tastes
Massively concentrated fruit with a sturdy backbone of toasty French oak, smoky gunflint notes give beautiful texture on the attack before giving way to a creamy, refined finish with lifted grapefruit acidity freshening. A superlative Chardonnay from start to finish, this is very youthful and will be at its best after 2027 and through 2035.
