Description
Kumeu Village Chardonnay is benchmark quality v price at its winery cellar door price of $25/bottle. Winemaker Michael Brajkovich MW says they… “always have a bottle in the fridge”. Bob Campbell MW says… “The first vintage of Village Chardonnay I tasted was from the 2002 vintage and it has been my house Chardonnay ever since”. Michael is effusive about 2024 saying... “The 2024 vintage was truly outstanding, with low yields contributing to the extra concentration of fruit aromas and flavours. This Village Chardonnay has citrus fruit aromas in abundance, and the flavours of fig, apple and white peach come through on the palate, with lovely texture and chalky lime acidity on the finish.” 100% handpicked fruit, 100% malolactic fermentation, 30% matured in seasoned French oak barriques, 70% in tank… Kumeu Village is handmade Chardonnay delivering exceptional quality and pleasure at an everyday price. The more recent addition of a sizable component of Hawke's Bay fruit has contributed a noticeable increase in mid-palate weight with a predominant stone fruit presence. NZ flavour delivered with Chablis like sophistication… such magnificent Chardonnay value it always runs out before the next vintage is ready. This 2024 is so good… it will run out sooner. It will be around a while though, so enjoy it while you can.
Smells
Fragrant aromas of citrus, nectarine, white peach, roasted nuts, and subtle lime mineral notes.
Tastes
Generous and richly fruited on the palate with abundant white peach, fresh fig, nectarine and citrus. A beautifully subtle thread of nutty oak adds charm as does biscuity flavours from lees aging. The fine creamy texture is juxtaposed with a fresh, subtly lime/chalk/citrus inspired minerality. NZ meets Chablis… superb with food (fresh seafood, summer salads, soups) and equally delicious by itself. For optimal drinking pleasure the recommended serving temperature is 10-13 degrees.
