Description
The iconic Hawke's Bay Riflemans vineyard is famous for producing its namesake Chardonnay, one of NZ's finest... crafted to age 10-20 years. Wine Thief is made by 10 x NZ Winemaker of the Year Nick Piccone using fruit off the same legendary Single Vineyard, aged and fermented in 100% French Oak (50% new). Whilst it doesn’t quite have the same unbridled power of Riflemans, it is outstanding Chardonnay with an extraordinarily modest price tag apropos its undeniable quality and style. This superbly concentrated and structured 2023 is a fusion of concentrated peach, nectarine and subtle ripe grapefruit with seductive toasty/spicy oak and buttery/biscuity lees richness. It will age beautifully through 2030+ if stored in quality conditions… equally it’s superb drinking NOW!
Smells
The toasty oak, peach, grapefruit, bran biscuit and brioche aromas get the olfactory senses in top gear.
Tastes
A generous, creamy palate with of rich stone fruit tinged with gently salivating ripe grapefruit... signature flavours of this legendary estate. Threaded by toasty oak and biscuit/buttery lees richness, with luscious acidity adding freshness. Despite its concentration and richness, it seduces rather than overwhelms. Utterly enjoyable now through 2030 and beyond with roasted chicken or pork.
