Description
The latest Smith & Sheth release hails from the globally famous Waitaki Valley, this 2023 Smith & Sheth Waitaki CRU (elite production) Chardonnay makes a spectacular statement for New Zealand’s newest wine region. It rated an impressive 95/100 at the Fine Wine Annual Chardonnay Tasting. Sourced from two distinct vineyards: Carluke Vineyard double density (4167 vines per ha) planted in 2012 with clones 15, 548 and 95 on limestone clay over marl soils, and Tatty Bogler Vineyard (nestled among mountains, ancient white limestone soils interlayered with river gravels, on a warm northwest slope). This cool-climate region is emerging as New Zealand’s next great terroir, especially as warming seasons are reaching further south. Waitaki is under the watchful eye of the World’s leading critics and elite producers. This spectacular 2023 CRU Chardonnay was handpicked and whole bunch pressed to tank, then lightly settled overnight prior to being transferred to barrel to complete a wild ferment in French oak, 42% new. 11 months in barrel and then 5 months in tank prior to being bottle unfined and unfiltered in August 2024. The concentrated low yielding fruit has beautifully subsumed the fine French oak. Fine Premier Cru White Burgundy & fuller styled Chablis drinkers will find it impressive and modestly priced to their normal French selections. Enjoy now… superbly cellar worthy through 2033.
Smells
Complex lifted florals with aromas of lychee, meadow, clover honey, lucerne, yellow flowers alongside intense citrus peel and a hint of cashew.
Tastes
Luscious lemon peel and richer lemon meringue pie with distinctive baked biscuit flavours… a seductive mid palate. Long, serious and quite dramatic with a salty saline finish, quite Chablis-esque despite its generous oak… a match to fine Premier Cru White Burgundy as well. Made for fresh oysters or line caught fish of the day. The recommended serving temperature is 10-13 degrees.
