Description

Runholder Chardonnay is a blend of 3 clones, including Mendoza, grown on their old-vine Runholder vineyard on the Martinborough Terrace… and crafted by outstanding NZ winemaker John Kavanagh. Grown/made fastidiously & expensively like Premier Cru White Burgundy. The low yielding fruit is hand-picked, hand sorted, whole bunch pressed and filled to French oak puncheons (judicious 27% new) for indigenous primary and malolatic fermentation over 10-months, with the lees periodically stirred. Post barrel aging, the wine was racked into stainless steel and bottled with minimal fining and filtration to help preserve the varietal character and inimitable personality of Runholder’s terroir. A concentrated, textural and elegant Chardonnay that will reward careful cellaring through 2030.

Smells

Ripe white peach & nectarine with seductive almond, cashew and toasted spice.

Tastes

The palate is laden with ripe stonefruit & grapefruit zest layered with subtle toasty oak, rich leesy nuttiness and spice. A wine of superb texture, concentration and intensity that speaks of its old vines. The finish is long and leisurely. Enjoy with fish or poultry dishes now or cellar through to 2028-2030.
