Description
Viognier (pronounced Vee-Yon-Yeh) is difficult to say, but when you taste a good example, it’s a light bulb moment. One sip of this wine and a million light bulbs will flash before your eyes. A deliciously rich, oily palate with aromas of canned apricots, ripe peach and vanilla spice… classic descriptives of Viognier. It’s everything you want from this variety. The grapes were harvested from the Tantallon and Campbells Brook vineyards in Hawkes Bay by machine and transported to their Riverview winery where they were pressed with a fraction of the juice going to barrel for fermentation and the remainder being fermented in stainless steel. A variety of yeasts were used, adding complexity, followed by maturation in both oak and stainless steel, preserving the essence of the variety. Unmistakably Viognier in flavour and mouth feel… they may have made a mistake with its giveaway price though.
Smells
Perfumed aromas of canned apricots, ripe peach, and vanilla spice.
Tastes
The palate displays rich stone fruit, tangerine, and honeysuckle with long lingering aromatic flavours of lavender and apricots. Very soft acid, true to the variety but the firm, piquant Gin & Tonic like finish is striking… giving balance and a long satisfying end, completing the picture! Drinking well now through 2025, enjoy on its own or with roasted white meats.
