Description
No winemaker in New Zealand demonstrates greater meticulousness or deeper understanding of terroir than Hans Herzog. A Hans Herzog label isn’t just a mark of quality—it’s a promise of an inspiring, often thought-provoking wine experience. Every grape variety Hans works with is carefully chosen for its clonal pedigree and perfect compatibility with his specific soils and sites. Hans employs low-yield cropping to achieve optimal ripeness, concentration, and balance, allowing the pure varietal character of each grape to shine. This Organic Viognier is a stunning example of his craftsmanship. It embodies everything that sets his wines apart—precision, harmony, and depth. For those who appreciate Viognier, Hans Herzog’s offering is a compelling alternative to similarly priced Rhône Condrieu, showcasing the grape’s elegance and richness with a distinct New Zealand flair.
Smells
Enticingly rounded aromas of white flowers, apricot, peach, spices, and honey.
Tastes
The weight and texture are impressive and embrace a rich array of stone fruits and spices infused with honey and buoyed by a salty freshness. Toasty oak nuances run strongly throughout, adding to the picture, making it a dead ringer for many a top barrel matured Condrieu. It is perfectly poised between richness and finesse and unlike quite a few Viogniers I would not easily tire of this wine – on the contrary, I would find it quite contemplative. Enjoy with poultry-inspired dishes now through 2029. The recommended serving temperature is 8-10 degrees.
