Description
Marsala is a fortified wine dry or sweet, produced in the region surrounding the Italian city of Marsala, Sicily. Marsala first received DOC status in 1969. Lombardo Marsala fine is made from 3 local varieties, Cataratto, Inzolia and Grillo in the west of Sicily. After gentle pressing the fermentation temperature was moderated to achieve the ideal sugar content. Once this sugar level was achieved, alcohol was added stopping the fermentation achieving a final alcohol of 17.5%. The wine was aged for one year in oak casks. An interesting, dynamic dessert wine or a wonderful addition to stews, soups and egg nogs, as well as a good match with hard cheese or gorgonzola.
Smells
the glass exhibits nutty and sugary aromas with hints of dried fruits, sunbaked apricots and toffee apples.
Tastes
the palate has flavors of honey, toffee, walnut, vanilla, stewed apricots as well as a dried fruit cake mix, licorice, and tobacco. It is typically low in tannins and has soft acid. Perfect drinking now and the recommended service is 14-16 degrees.
