Description

Inspired by Greg Hay, founding winemaker and shareholder in Peregrine wines. Greg exited several years ago and set up his new wine venture “Wet Jacket”. It includes his earnestly sought after and hard to come by flagship Wet Jacket wines… plus his more readily available (still demand exceeding supply) Putangi wines. Greg is an ardent environmentalist and is deeply involved in the funding and support for preservation of birdlife in the Dusky Sounds. Putangi is the name dedicated to the dingy that Richard Henry used to try and save as many of our rarest birds, Kakapo and Kiwi from extinction from rodents. He rowed around the Dusky Sounds in his dingy named Putangi, collecting as many birds as possible, and transferring them to what he hoped would be the safety of Resolution Island. He was a man of inspiration and dedication, which Greg has transposed into this wonderful 2021 Putangi… quintessential Pinot Gris, luscious, rich, pure and refreshing.

Smells

Alluring aromas of apple blossom, guava, pear, nectarine, baking spice, Crème Brulée and honeysuckle.

Tastes

A smooth, rich palate with layers of luscious tropical fruits, pineapple, mandarin, baked pears… threaded with delicious ginger spice. Delicate phenolics and minerality with ripe lime combine to create an absorbing finish. Made for roasted chicken with all the trimmings, the perfect combo. Drinking well now through 2025… you’ll probably drink a glass while cooking and you should save one for after dinner too.
