Description
Prophet's Rock winemaker Paul Pujol makes Riesling quite differently than most NZ wineries, his technique heavily influenced by his experiences in Alsace. The general theme is time - with long, slow, wild fermentation and aging on lees in tank, and with 2 years in bottle before release. The famously upfront aromatics of Riesling are toned down in favour of amazing texture and weight, a little residual sugar giving further richness to the palate.
Smells
Nuanced and subtle, yet powerful and concentrated with gooseberry, honeycomb, white flowers, lemon, and white peach.
Tastes
powerful and very satisfying at first, then a wave of chalky texture, creamy lees and fresh acid dance across the palate, the honeyed tropical fruit and almost caramel notes lingering long on the finish. Full-bodied by Riesling standards, this is reminiscent of the Hugel Grossi Laue from Alsace, a stunning wine and one of the rarest and sought-after white wines in the country.
