Description
Sauvignon Blanc is to Marlborough is like Malbec is to Mendoza, Tempranillo to Rioja, Cabernet to Bordeaux… the ultimate expression globally for these great grapes. Sir George Fistonich wowed the global wine world with his Michelle Richardson crafted Villa Maria Sauvignon Blancs… putting NZ on the world wine radar. He and Chief Winemaker Michelle of the late 1990’s and early 2,000 years were the ‘Dream Team’ totally dominating the wine shows throughout NZ with their plethora of outstanding wines from Private Bin level through to Reserve & Single Vineyard wines. Michelle eventually went offshore to expand her winemaking horizons and experience. Sir George, a cornerstone of the New Zealand wine industry, not only brought Villa Maria wines to global prominence but also advocated for all NZ wines. Though we were saddened by the sale of Villa Maria, Sir George's passion for winemaking remains undiminished. He still owned the physical assets of Esk Valley, and some key vineyards. Age does not weary him, he elected to start all over and asked Michelle to come back and reignite the ‘Dream Team’. To this day they are probably the most prolific winning partnership of Champion Trophies & Gold Medals. It’s early days but if this exciting high-altitude Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc from the exceptional 2023 vintage is a barometer… then they haven’t lost a beat in their 20-year hiatus. Post-fermentation, the wine was left on its yeast lees to enhance mouthfeel and length, delivering a truly memorable experience.
Smells
Distinctively Marlborough for all its beauty and intensity, fresh lemons, limes, gooseberries and subtle hints of nettle.
Tastes
It vibrantly embraces the palate with an explosion of ripe green fruits and notes of chamomile, nettle, and fine citrus. The abundant fruit is balanced by a crystalline acid thread and mineral texture propelling the luscious flavours to a deeply refreshing lime-tinged finish. Classic Marlborough Sauvignon, drinking well now through 2026. Serve with fresh catch of the day and for optimal drinking pleasure, the recommended serving temperature is 7-10 degrees.
